"More and more we're starting to see articles in the news about the issues of a sedentary lifestyle or work life. I purchased this mini-stepper to get me out of my office chair and working my way back to a healthier me. I use it when on the phone or for times when I don't need to sit. It is small and compact enough for office use, especially in offices that cannot support treadmill desks. It is solid and of sound construction. It is not easy to flip over, which alleviates concerns of safety. It comes with resistance cords which add stability. It's easy to add the pedometer/counter and adjust the tension.
It has created quite a bit of buzz in my office. Many people have tried it out and some have gone and purchased a stepper.
Con: Bonus CD. For some reason, I was expecting more of a DVD rather than an audio/talk CD. I wanted to see people using the stepper rather than hearing someone try to motivate me by simply talking to me over music."

Perfect size!
Date: March 29, 2012
"I love my new mini stepper. I have an eliptical machine that has been sitting in my basement for over a year and I never use it and it takes up so much space. The mini stepper is small easy to move, I usually keep it in the living room so I can jump on it anytime I feel like a quick workout. It definitely gets your heart pounding pretty quickly, especially if you use the arm bands. The only problem with mine is it squeaks quite a bit. I am going to try oiling it to see if that helps. I'm still happy I bought it!"

Great buy for home cardio workout
Date: January 3, 2012
"I really don't like cardio but I know it's important to include along with my yoga and pilates workout. I wanted something small to fit in my apartment that actually works. This stepper is easy to assemble. You can watch TV while getting in a workout, and the monitor will tell you how long and how many calories you burned. Also love that it came with a battery included. I bought this on sale after about a year of considering it and I'm so glad I did. It's the perfect addition to creating a home gym in a small space, easy to store and feels great! And thanks to it's size and weight, it will be easy to pack and ship when we're out of the military next year!"

great value
Date: December 27, 2011
"This is compact, well-priced stepper-- the workout is good. We are in a temporary apt (3 months). We looked into gym memberships but the daily charges were too high and there was no short term reasonable option- so we looked for an alternative-- this is perfect. You can get your heart rate up, get a workout, and it's easy to stow in small spaces."

Great fun!

"When I moved from a house to an apartment I had to get rid of all my fitness equipment. This piece works great and takes up virtually no room. It was easy to set up and does give you a good workout. My sister (who is a real fitness buff) tried it the other day and really liked it so I will now buy a second one for her. Try it!"

Great Workout for people new to working out
Date: March 12, 2011
"I have never liked to work out. However, I decided its time to make a habit of it and needed something that would help me work out my lower body. The Mini-stepper was an investment for me and a worthy one. It gets my heart going and some burn in my thighs and I even like working out now! I LOVE the arm bands since that increases the cardio workout and I am seeing some new definition in my arms. The only thing I don't like is that one of the arm bands sometimes pops out when I am working out making me lose my balance, so be aware and twist them in very tightly."

This is fun!

"I leave this out for convenience and I can't just walk past it, I can't resist geting on and stepping for awhile. It's in the kitchen so when I wait for toast to pop or food to cook I get in some exercise. I'm downsizing my household and this is just the thing for small spaces but it really works the muscles, my legs are reasonably strong but I quickly get a nice burn in my thighs."

Expected better
Date: October 22, 2010
"My friend got me this a couple of months back to help me with my health and fitness goals. After reading the reviews, I expected better. I don't know if I got a faulty piece. The pedals don't go very high - it doesnt feel like I've really taken a full step each time. The steps feel very jerky each time. The knob doesn't move smoothly. Also the timer/calorie counter doesnt turn off when I'm done. My friend is in the middle of a move & I can't ask her to help me return or exchange this product. I tried contacting GAIAM's customer service to check if they could help me with an exchange, but no response."

"Mini" is right...
Date: September 16, 2010
"They are not kidding when they call this a "mini" stepper. The step height is ridiculously tiny, especially on the lowest resistance setting. Turning the resistance as high as it will go does increase the height a bit--but nowhere near what they show in the picture.
Perhaps I got a broken machine, but I find this to be completely worthless and it sits unused."

too many issues
Date: August 22, 2010
"i just received my stepper and have discovered several problems. the mechanism that counts the steps, calories, etc. does not fit on my stepper. in addition, the steps make a "clunking" noise, prompting me to purchase $16 gym squares to minimize the noise in my very quiet apartment building. as soon as i placed the stepper on the mat, then the LOUD squeaking on the right pedal began (now i understand what other reviewers were talking about). i can't afford to keep buying things to remedy problems that shoudn't exist. not looking forward to mailing that heavy contraption back."

The timer stops working in less than 1 month
Date: August 16, 2010
"I just got this mini stepper in July, 2010. In less than a month, the timer on it stops working. I requested for a replacement for the defective timer, it arrived today on August 16, 2010, and even with new battery, the timer remains at STOP while the stepper is in motion.
The stepper is a good machine, but unfortunately the timer is defective. I just emailed customer service for another replacement. Hopefully, this time round, it will finally work.
I will update this review when I received the timer, and hope it will be mail to me soon."

"It's simple, inexpensive and works well in my small space. I took off the arm cords because I didn't really like them. It does get a little hot so be careful moving it after use. The CD isn't very interesting but the CD isn't really the point. I think this is a very good price for something so compact and useful."

It's a winner
Date: May 25, 2010
"I was a regular at the gym until recently when it just didn't fit my style anymore. I wanted to find something to raise my heart rate and keep my strength without putting stress on my knees. I decided to take a chance on the Mini Stepper and it has worked out really well as a solution. I can work out at home, stretch, step some more and go at my own rhythm. I find it's great for the long-haul and keeps me challenged where I need it, and, I use free weights as a compliment when not using the arm bands."

Loved it to death!
Date: February 23, 2010
"I was really happy with this, for the most part; it was a great workout, easy to use. However, I had to oil it every couple of months, as it would get difficult to use (and squeak horribly) otherwise, and every few months the cable would pop off of the pulley altogether! Putting it back on was difficult (and messy, since the oil I had to put on would get all over my hands) and required me to pull out a wrench, take it apart, and enlist someone to help me pop it back into place, and I never quite knew what was going to cause it to pop off -- what can I do to prevent that in the future?
After about eight months of frequent use (30-60 minutes a day, 4-7 days a week), it was the end. First one of the resistance bands broke off at the handle -- the handle itself had come off previously, but this time the band itself had broken -- and last week the metal part the pulley is fixed onto started to snap clean off, rendering the stepper completely unusable.
Admittedly, I did use it pretty heavily, and a lot of what I've heard about other steppers suggests that six to twelve months is a pretty standard lifespan, depending on usage. I'll probably buy another one, but I was disappointed, and I hate to think I'm just going to have to buy a new one every year (or more) -- it seems pretty wasteful, and the cost doesn't seem quite as good when I factor in that I'm going to be spending that same amount at least once a year.
All of that said, I do love the stepper and plan to buy a new one, and I would definitely recommend it to others -- I have done just that, in fact! I just recommend it with the caveat that it's not as great a buy as it seems at first glance."

"I purchased the mini stepper because I try to walk 30 minutes a day. The weather is not always cooperative and I am not one to venture out in the elements. This stepper has allowed me to stick to my goal of 30 minutes a day and get a good arm workout too. Love this!"

"Very dissapointed with this product. The tension knob (once you figure it out) is so tight you can hardly adjust it. The are bands are placed so that as you bring them up, the handles hit the wrist bones. To top it off, it cost me $25 to return it. I will be more careful with my Gaiam purchases."

So far, collecting no dust!
Date: January 14, 2010
"Over the (many) years I have purchased various types of home exercise equipment, only to find them difficult to use space hogs that eventually become dust-collecting eyesores. The mini-stepper, so far, is breaking this trend. It is truly compact in size and yet stable to use on either the wood floors or carpets. The tension control allows a nice range of difficulty. We had some minor fears about there being nothing other than resistance bands to hold on to, but the foot pedals promote good balance. It does take practise to coordinate the cords with the feet, but that is not any real drawback. The step-counter/timer unit seems to do a fine job, although I can't see it while on the stepper because it is too dim, so I do set a chime timer or time myself by a video or music or other listening event. All in all, we are pleased, and recommend this as an exercise machine appropriate for those days when walking or going to the gym are not in the plan."

So far so good!
Date: January 3, 2010
"Just put this together and took my first try at it - feels solid and has the right amount of resistance for this to be a low-impact workout. It won't be something I can "run" on, but the pace seems to be enough to get the heart rate up. Bought this to use in the winter while watching the evening news - should be perfect!
Only slight downside are the directions for assembly. Take a little time to figure it out, since the written directions aren't really useful."
